21st Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

Anton Palzer 1: 29.31 hours (Ramsau/Berchtesgaden) and Michelle Maier (Bad Aibling) are the winners of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018. The 21st edition of the classic South Tyrolean mountain race on Saturday in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage was thus dominated by athletes from Bavaria. Maier not only set a new track record with a winning time of 1:42.34 hours - it was also the first triumph of a German mountain runner in the 20-year history of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run.

During the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2018, the 15,000 finisher crossed the finish line since the first edition in 1998. Interestingly, it was a South Tyrolean athlete: Angelika Hinteregger from Castelrotto running for LG Schlern came in in 233rd place with a time of 2:18.32 hours. A total of 1000 mountain runners from 23 countries had registered for the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. The South Tyrolean mountain running spectacle was once again sold out.

20. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

Everything was ready for a fabulous party on the 20th anniversary of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. At the end, the weather forced organisers ALV Sextner Dolomiten to change their plans.
After the start at 11:00 am at Casa Sesto the mountain run in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage had to be cancelled for safety reasons after 7 km.


19. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

On 17 September 2016 the former mountain running World Champion Petro Mamu from Eritrea and Italian Sara Bottarelli won the 19th edition of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. Because of snowfalls in the mountains the popular mountain run had to be moved to an alternative route of 12 km distance and an elevation of 1300 metres, which took the participants directly from Rifugio Fondo Valle to the finish at Rifugio Antonio Locatelli.


18. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run

The 18th edition of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run ended with the two favourites winning their race. The men’s race was won by mountain running favourite Andrzej Dlugosz. Top mountain runner Antonella Confortola was ahead in the women’s race and overtook local athlete Agnes Tschurtschenthaler (Sesto) in the final meters, racing to victory.

A huge thank-you to all the volunteers, sponsors and the members of the organising committee, who all ensured that yet again the Drei Zinnen Run was a fantastic mountain running event.

17. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2014

Jonathan Wyatt also left his mark on the 17th Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run. On Saturday the Val di Fiemme resident from New Zealand won the famous mountain run for the sixth time, having already won it in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2011.

Nicola Golinelli from Lecco came second; the best local mountain runner, Philipp Götsch from Tirolo, took third place.

For the women everyone was banking on a duel between Elisa Compagnoni and Sara Bottarelli. At the end it was Victoria Kreuzer from Switzerland who was the delighted winner. The 25 year old from Fiesch completed the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run with a time of 1h 48‘ 10‘‘ and can now add one of the most beautiful mountain runs in the world to her collection of wins.

A total of nearly 1,000 athletes from 21 countries in three different continents gathered at the start.

16. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2013

The 16th edition of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run crowns a new winner, the current mountain running World Champion Petro Mamu, who raced to victory in his first attempt at the popular mountain run in the Sesto Dolomites. The 30-year old won with a top time of 1h 22'46‘‘ ahead of five times World Champion Jonathan Wyatt from New Zealand, who finished with a time of 1h 27’46‘‘, followed by South Tyrolean athletes Thomas Niederegger und Roland Clara. In fifth place was Emanuele Manzi, winner of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run in 2000.

In the women’s race the Italian “Azzurri” dominated the field. Favourite Renate Rungger (1h 49‘28‘‘) and Sara Bottarelli (1h 49‘43‘‘) confirmed the forecasts and came in first and second, ahead of the big surprise of the day, Emmi Collinge from England, who won third place with a time of 1h 54’19‘‘.

South Tyrolean Edeltraud Thaler came fourth, Austrian Susanne Mair won fifth place.

The new record of over 1,000 athletes at the start and the early closure of registrations because the start limit had been reached sooner than expected, confirm the growing success of the popular mountain run in the heart of the world cultural heritage of the Dolomites.
 


15. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2012

In glorious weather and the indescribably beautiful backdrop of the Sesto Dolomites the 15th Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run once again provided an emotional experience on the 17.5 long route with the finish at the breathtaking Three Peaks.

Jonathan Wyatt did not make it! The five times winner of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run from New Zealand was beaten into second place, 90 seconds behind Italian Gabriele Abate with his top time of 1 h 26'21“. Alex Baldaccini from Bergamo came third, just about leaving the two South Tyrolean runners Hannes Rungger and Thomas Niederegger behind.

For the women, Mariagrazia Roberti from Lombardy achieved her third consecutive victory with a time of 1 h 47'36“. In second place was Jonathan Wyatt’s partner Antonella Confortola (1 h 51'33“), followed by Norwegian Therese Sjursen (1 h 56'50“). German Sylke Schmitz came in fourth place ahead of the highest placed South Tyrolean Anna Pedevilla from Valdaora, who was come first on the last kilometres in a duel with Anna Frost from New Zealand.

A new record of 1,000 participants with registrations closing earlier than advertised on Friday, mark this 15th Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run in the World Heritage of the Dolomites.
 


14. Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run 2011

The 14th Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run took place in stunning weather and ideal temperatures. The incomparable panorama along the 17.5 km route with finish at the breathtaking Three Peaks ensures that this is the most beautiful mountain run in Europe.

Jonathan Wyatt won the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run for the 5th time! The athlete from New Zealand ran the 14th edition of the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run on Sunday and won his 5th victory in the most beautiful mountain run in the Dolomites with a time of 1 h 29'11“. Behind the six times mountain running World Champion came the German Helmuth Schiessl (1 h 29'25“) ahead of Roland Clara from Riscone (1 h 30'11“). In 4th place was Thomas Moriggl, in 5th place Austrian David Schneider.

For the women, Mariagrazia Roberti from Lombardy achieved her second consecutive victory with a time of 1 h 51'00“. Second came Francesca Iachemet from Trieste (1 h 55'05“) ahead of the German Ellen Clemens (1 h 59'49“). Fourth was Austrian Thea Lillehov ahead of her colleague Petra Wimmer. In sixth place came the highest ranking South Tyrolean, Irene Senfter from Lana.

Over 900 athletes participated in the race, among them the well-known BBC journalist Ben Fogle.
